Baton Rouge, La. — Denise Reed, Ph.D., Chief Scientist at The Water Institute of the Gulf, has been appointed to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Science Advisory Board. The NOAA Science Advisory Board is the only Federal Advisory Committee with responsibility to advise the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere on strategies for research, education, and application of science to operations and information services.
NOAA Administrator Dr. Kathy Sullivan and NOAA Chief Scientist Dr. Rick Spinrad announced the appointment of Dr. Reed and three new members to the NOAA Science Advisory Board in a recent meeting held in Silver Spring, Maryland. Dr. Reed has decades of national and international experience in coastal marsh sustainability and the role of human activities in modifying coastal systems.
“It is a great honor to be appointed to the NOAA Science Advisory Board.” said Dr. Reed. “I have worked for over 30 years on coastal and water-related issues, and NOAA is the agency at the forefront of understanding and predicting change in coasts and oceans, as well as providing crucial information to all of us about weather and related-hazards on a daily basis. So I look forward to working alongside a diverse team of experts to do what I can to advise NOAA leadership on research needs and the use of science in operations and information services.”
At the Institute, Dr. Reed oversees an integrated applied research program focused on addressing challenging, real-world problems related to coastal, deltaic, and water resource systems. In addition, she has convened the Expert Panel on Diversions Planning and Implementation and is currently coordinating efforts between modeling and decision support teams for Louisiana’s 2017 Coastal Master Plan.
Dr. Reed has also served on numerous boards and panels addressing the effects of human alterations on coastal environments and the role of science in guiding restoration, including a number of National Research Council committees.
