Rick Luettich, Sc.D., is a distinguished professor and Director of the University of North Carolina’s Institute of Marine Sciences and Center for the Study of Natural Hazards and Disasters. Luettich specializes in modeling coastal systems. Among his accomplishments is the development of a widely used storm surge model that has become a cornerstone of storm surge studies following hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.
